Handwritten fonts have the ability to transform your designs into something that looks personal and authentic. They have a wide variety of applications; you can use them for social media posts, signs and posters, logos, note taking and even tattoos!
There are a variety of styles depending on the specific vibe you need for your project. If you are making a sign, you may want a simple readable font, whereas a wedding invitation calls for a cursive or script handwritten font. You may also want a font that looks like a child wrote it (this is also great for signs and posters). So in this post I have curated a list of 50 free handwritten fonts that are available for download and also come with a commercial license, which is always a plus. I am grouping these fonts into five categories that range from elegant to messy and playful fonts.
This blog post contains affiliate links. The fonts are totally free but if you choose to make a separate purchase on Creative Fabrica, I will make a small commission at no cost to you.
Script & cursive handwritten fonts
Script and cursive fonts typically feature connected letters and curves that look like they were drawn with a fountain pen or a fine-tip brush. I am also including a few signature fonts in this category. You may want to use this type of typography if you are aiming for a design that feels more elegant than casual. You might find these fonts particularly suitable for your work if you are designing wedding invitations, watermarks for photography or personal branding projects.

Cute & fun handwritten fonts
This category of handwritten fonts typically features rounded letterforms and a bouncy baseline that look like they were written with a gel pen or a marker. I am including fonts that are highly legible and relaxed in this category. You may want to use this type of typography if you are aiming for a design that feels friendly and approachable rather than formal. You might find these fonts particularly suitable for your work if you are creating social media graphics, digital planners, greeting cards etc..

Messy kids handwritten fonts
This category of free handwritten fonts includes scratchy and messy fonts that look realistic enough to be written by a child. You may want to use these for when mimicking a child’s handwriting or for designs like posters for schools.
Bold display handwritten fonts
Bold display handwritten fonts are characterized by their heavy weight. These fonts look like they’ve been written using a thick marker. Because of their high-impact visibility, you may want to use them for posters, YouTube thumbnails or merch like t-shirts and stickers.
Simple & easy to read handwritten fonts
This selection of free handwritten fonts is defined by their clean and separated letterforms that make them super easy to read. You may want to use this type of typography if you are creating designs where clarity is just important, such as teacher worksheets, recipe cards or long-form journaling.
All caps handwritten fonts
All caps handwritten fonts are exactly what they sound like; their typefaces feature only uppercase letters. These are perfect if you need to create a headline that feels approachable.
